BeCon Projects Use Case: airBaltic Cargo Hub – RIX

Scope of our services
BeCon Projects GmbH served as a key strategic and technological partner throughout the development of the airBaltic Cargo Hub – one of the most advanced and multifunctional cargo facility in the Baltic region.
Our responsibilities included:
– Master Planning: Development of the overall infrastructure masterplan on a 15,000 sqm land plot, including a 5,200 sqm building footprint.
– Architectural Pre-Design: Creation of the architectural pre-design, which formed the basis for the entire infrastructure and facility design later developed by airBaltic.
– Operational Concept Design: Comprehensive design of cargo operations, supporting both conventional cargo flows and specialized handling services.
– Material Handling System (MHS) Consultancy: Concept development and technological consulting; execution of RFP, FAT, and SAT procedures; technical supervision during installation; coordination with building designers and civil contractors.
– FIDIC Engineer Role: Full project oversight in accordance with FIDIC guidelines, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery.
Project Highlights
– Facility Specifications: Total area: 6,895 sqm; Capacity: 45,000 tons of air cargo annually; Direct cargo apron access at RIX Riga Airport
– Integrated Features: The special characteristic of this hub is that it combines airBaltic’s core Mail-Handling business with a full scope of air cargo handling capability, from a full wide body freighter (ie 20ft handling, main deck ULD handling) to narrow body bulk hold cargo and special commodities like DGR, AVI, PIL/CRT, FRO, PER, RRY, VAL, VUN etc., EU point of entry with Food & Veterinary services on site and 10ft ULD & 5ft ULD landside BUP handling capabilities.
– The mail sorting belt is designed for cross-use of mail and bulk-hold cargo shipments up to 30 kgs, allowing a single operator to handle multiple destinations – be it transit, terminating or outbound – using mail handling software and cargo handling software.
It has direct air side access and uses automatic detection of radioactive material and video analytics for airside security along its airside.
– Sustainability & Technology: Implementation of BREEAM sustainability standards; BIM-driven coordination and 3D model integration; Laser scanning of infrastructure for MHS pit accuracy
